Cuenca has a population of over 600,000 inhabitants, a diabetes prevalence of 5.3%, and an obesity and overweight prevalence exceeding 70%. The city is renowned for its ancient culinary tradition, which has been diminishing over time. Both in Ecuador and in many other countries, obesity and diabetes represent emerging issues, especially in the most vulnerable areas. Therefore, targeted interventions in a central food market, the 12 de Abril market, and in three schools will contribute to the reduction and prevention of both diseases.

Key challenges that the partnership seeks to address are a lack of knowledge in the population about the importance of preventing and managing diabetes and obesity, decreased consumption of vegetables and local products, and a gradual loss of culinary tradition.

Limited access to resources, including medical care, sports facilities, and healthy eating options, especially in the most vulnerable communities present additional challenges to residents in living healthy lives.

The partnership will implement an education and health promotion programme to enable and encourage healthy behaviours in the 12 de Abril Market and three educational centers in Cuenca. The aim is to prevent obesity and diabetes by improving dietary habits, self-care, and physical activity among vulnerable populations, fostering sustainable changes in their health behaviour.

“We are #ProudlyCuenca of our beloved Cuenca, known as the Athens of Ecuador, being recognized as the 50th city worldwide, the first in Ecuador, and the second in Latin America to be part of the global network of Cities for Better Health. With #LoveForCuenca, we commit to making our city a model of public health, promoting prevention and awareness about the impact of diabetes, overweight and obesity.

Since the signing of the agreement in July 2024, we have been working on programs and campaigns that address these challenges with a comprehensive and coordinated approach. Cities for Better Health bring together local leaders, health authorities, educational institutions, businesses, and community organizations in a strong collaboration that will bring about significant changes in our public health.

Cuenca aspires to be a reference in Ecuador and Latin America, leading with educational and communication programs on nutrition, disease prevention, and healthy habits. At the 12 de Abril Market, we are already conducting community workshops, awareness campaigns and sports activities, making health a collective effort and a right for all.

Our vision of a healthy city prioritizes the dignity and care of rural areas, ensuring that every action and policy reflects our conviction to build a fair and healthy Cuenca for all."
