Dunga Road in Nairobi, Kenya, is a busy corridor where schoolchildren, vendors and commuters gather daily. Yet cars dominate the street, meaning that it is built for traffic, not people. The GoDown Arts Centre, a winner of the Healthy Cities Challenge, is piloting a redesign shaped by women and the community, with wider footpaths, a median and greenery to reduce heat and pollution. In partnership with Nairobi City County, the project shows how car-centric streets can become safer, welcoming public spaces.
